(Lack of) Work out consistency and balance for a dad

Maintaining consistency when life gets tough...

Note: This is a guest post by Abu Abid

As father of two young kids with different mindsets and temperaments, working out can get challenging, their schedules keep changing, their wake up times will fluctuate dependent on how tired they felt the night before and even random sicknesses peppered in between everything.

One tries to find comfort and balance in working out, but as a father that can get challenging, but as I see myself moving up the age scale, I try to find balance one way or the other. Coming from a Pakistani/ Indian background we know our foods are filled with oils and fats, and trying to balance kids with a workout schedule which seems to rarely work out (hope you got that dad joke :p) you have to learn to just balance everything one way or the other. Acid reflux creeps its ugly face in between a perfectly decent week, which also plays a role into everything.

One thing is trying to make sure you have at least a small workout routine you can keep up with regardless of situation, it will keep you honest and at least a little bit active, just 3 sets of: 10 push ups, ten sit ups, ten mountain climbers, and ten sitting twist will help out a bit in keeping you going. Yes you may not win Mr. Olympia or it may not even make you look that much better, but just trying to keep up the consistency in any way shape or form. You need to get up and at least have a bare minimum that you comlete, because trust me, I know from experience if you don’t do anything for months, it’s not as easy to get up and even do one circuit of those simple and easy to do exercises.

Another small way of balance is maybe ease off the gas at dinner time, it’s not necessary to eat a bowl of the pasta you like, or 3 nans plus curry. You can eat a bowl of yogurt and some fruits for dinner, you will feel light and easy, plus add in some granola to maybe get that energy for a late night run or quick gym run. Just balance it out, if you are trying to lose a little weight before that relatives big wedding or just to fit into those old jeans to prove to your significant other, you still got it, just balance it out a little and it will go a long way.

Just do something small and over time it will add up.

Stay fit,
Abu Abid
