Carry the Momentum - Ramadan Fitness #4

Losing momentum could mean losing all progress...

Newton’s first law states: an object in motion will stay in motion until acted upon by an external force.

Although this describes a physical phenomenon, I’ve always felt that this can apply to the intangible concept of momentum.

In a basketball game you could be down 20 points, then hit a couple big shots and totally change the momentum of the game. When that momentum changes and things are flowing for you, there’s no telling what could happen. You may even end up going on a run and winning by 20.

If you’re a coach and you see the other team is gaining momentum, you try to do whatever you can to stop that momentum. You call a timeout, you run plays to stop the hot shooter, you even foul if you have to. You have to become the external force that acts upon the object (in this case the other team) that’s in motion.

Physics metaphors aside, many of us made serious progress throughout the course of this month. We put mind over matter day in and day out. We built a lot of momentum in these last 29/30 days. When the Eid feasts and desserts begin, just remember that you currently have momentum.

You’re up 10 points right now. There’s nothing wrong with taking a break, but don’t let the momentum swing the other way.

Eid Mubarak!
